Being a Caregiver during the Holidays

December 18, 2024

A cancer caregiver is a person who provides physical and emotional support to someone with cancer. Caregivers can be family members, friends, or partners. They can help with a variety of tasks, including daily needs like bathing and dressing, household tasks like cleaning and cooking, errands such as shopping and picking up medications, paying bills and other financial responsibilities, scheduling appointments and providing transportation, emotional support, and so much more.

The role of a caregiver is busy and that is never truer than during the holiday season. If you, or a loved one, is helping someone with cancer, below are some tips to supporting someone with cancer during the holiday season.

  • Be sensitive and understanding:
Recognize that they might be experiencing a range of emotions.
  • Offer practical help:
Ask how you can assist with errands, cooking, or transportation.
  • Respect their boundaries:
If they need space, give it to them, but also let them know you are available to listen.
  • Be flexible with plans:
Be willing to adjust holiday activities to accommodate their needs.
  • Give thoughtful gifts:
Consider gifts that promote comfort and relaxation, like cozy blankets, books, or gift cards for services.
